If you want a feel for how Web-CAT's web user interface works, you can take a walk through our on-line user interface prototype.

Prior to December 2004, the first version of Web-CAT had a "wizard style" user interface that was modeled after program wizards used under Microsoft Windows. You can see some screenshots in OurPublications, such as in our OOPSLA 2003 paper and in our OOPSLA 2003 poster.

During the summer and fall of 2004, however, a new interface was designed that used a more conventional tab-based navigation scheme. Our user interface prototype is a set of PHP pages that give the basic look and feel that we used in redesigning Web-CAT's look and feel. The second generation Web-CAT interface was rolled out in January 2005 for public use. The new interface is similar to what is in the UI prototype, although many details have evolved in the implementation process. Nevertheless, walking through the UI prototype will give you some feel for what the basic parts of the system are like, including the pages students use to submit assignments and receive feedback.
